If earbuds stay in a object–pocket or case that agitates, they tend to be tangled or knotted physically. The research spontaneous knotting of an agitated string by Dorian M. Raymer and Douglas E. Smith concluded that the earbud tangles are the results of the level of agitation along with the length of earbuds wire. The more wire is long, the more it tend to be knotted in a specific level of agitation. Another factor contributing to the tangles is y-shaped string, which is to split the cable into 2 wires.
Longer cable will increase the probabitlity of knotting. Cable length of earbuds today is around 1.2m, so they are mostly intended to be knotted when carried around.
